Nour is 14 years old and lives with his three older brothers and his terminally ill mother in a French working-class settlement by the sea. The long summer holidays lay ahead of him and he has to spend them doing community service at his own school. While painting a wall, he meets the opera singer Sarah, who is leading a singing class during the holidays. A whole new world opens up for Nour, difficult to reconcile with his everyday life between his brothers’ petty criminal activities and caring for his mother.
What sounds like an all too familiar coming-of-age story about a child who successfully overcomes the barriers of his background, however, avoids the usual clichés: an impressive ensemble of actors, outstanding images, moving music and a fresh, humorous look at people and life in disadvantaged neighbourhoods.
