Intense family drama from Tunisia

Tunisia in the summer of 2011. Fares and Meriem are a happy, successful couple, their comfortable personal lives are largely unaffected by the profound changes in the country. With their eleven-year-old son Aziz, they are in a good mood on their way to a short vacation in the south of the country. Suddenly shots are fired and the windows of the car burst. Fares manages to escape the Islamist rebels, but Aziz is hit by a bullet and seriously injured. In the hospital, it turns out that the boy needs a liver transplant. In the search for a suitable donor, a long-kept secret comes to light that, above all, forces Fares to rethink his self-image as a father and husband and to recalibrate his moral compass.

In his impressive, versatile debut film, Mehdi M. Barsaoui manages to create a great emotional tension and to tell the relationship between the two grandly cast main characters in the face of the catastrophe full of nuances without ever becoming pathetic.
