After more than 40 years of Franco dictatorship, the Spanish Parliament passed an amnesty law in 1977 that not only guaranteed the release of all political prisoners but also prohibited any prosecution of dictatorship crimes.
The law, which still applies today, ensures that the man who tortured José Galante now lives unmolested only a few meters away from his own home. It leaves people mourn for their parents loss at anonymous mass graves, mothers and fathers without knowing where their stolen children live today and makes survivors walk through streets that are named after their tormentors everyday.
José Galante, along with other victims, is beginning to fight for the criminal investigation of the atrocities, facing a society in which forgetfulness and repression have dug deep into national identity.
