A film is shot in a language school for immigrants in Rome. While the teacher is played by a professional actor, the students of the Italian class all play themselves: Easther from Nigeria, Lyudmyla from Ukraine, Moussa from Senegal, Shadi from Egypt and Sheida from Iran. While waiting for their residence permits, they learn to conduct job interviews and to describe their familial and professional situation in class. Their individual fates are as different as their countries of origin and the sympathetic teacher creates a space for them to share their stories.
Blurring the lines between fact and fiction, director Daniele Gaglianone has created a film within a film. He provides insights into the protagonists’ lives, that are sad and funny at the same time and in addition invites the audience to reflect on the responsibilities that come with filmmaking.
